History & Lit: Rotation 2 (Grades 5-8)
(Digital copy)

$ 89.00 USD
These Literature & History bundles for grades 5–8 focus on the period from 1650–1800 AD in US or Canadian and World History, and study Ancient History from 550-100BC once a week as well (Alveary Rotation 2). Students grow in their relationship with the past through short lessons filled with engaging narratives, primary source documents, atlases, maps, and History Chart and Book of Centuries work. Literature lessons span mythology (such as Bulfinch's Age of Fable for grades 5-6), to historical fiction and classics like Treasure Island and My Brother Sam is Dead, and period texts such a free verse version of Equiano's narrative and an 18th century Chinese detective novel. Students also read three Shakespeare plays per year — typically a tragedy, a comedy, and a history — with this year's selctions including Macbeth, Henry IV Part 1, and Much Ado About Nothing. Poetry reading covers a wide variety of authors and poems and focuses particuarly on William Blake, Ben Franklin's Wit and Wisdom, and Phillis Wheatley while Grades 7-8 also begin to study the inner workings of poetry one a week as well. *Since history is the "pivot of the curriculum" in a Charlotte Mason education, many subjects increasingly coordinate with the historical time period, including church history (in Bible), picture study, composer study, handicrafts, and geography, so consider adding these lessons to enrich your study of the time.
The multi-authored Charlotte Mason Centenary Monograph series is designed to highlight and explore the continuing educational and leadership relevance of Charlotte Mason (1842–1923) through the collective contributions of the Armitt Museum and Library, the University of Cumbria, the Charlotte Mason Institute, and other scholars and practitioners worldwide.
