Where Have you Seen Charlotte Mason’s Philosophy Lately?

One of our team’s favorite questions to ask is “Where have you seen Charlotte Mason’s philosophy lately?” Books, of course, are an obvious choice. For example, in Understood Betsy by Dorothy Canfield Fisher, Betsy is shocked to find her new rural school places students by ability rather than grade level and expects her to think for herself.
The Year of Miss Agnes by Kirkpatrick Hill never mentions Charlotte Mason, but Miss Agnes might as well have been one of Mason’s House of Education graduates. As a new teacher in a remote Alaskan village, she introduces quality literature, art, and music while respecting the personhood and culture of her students.
In How the Heather Looks by Joan Bodger, the family reminds me of many Charlotte Mason families who raised their children on classic British literature like Winnie the Pooh, Swallows and Amazons, and Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter, a Lake District contemporary of Mason.
Charlotte Mason shows up in unexpected places as well. I’m often surprised to find her ideas in business magazines and books, for instance. Efforts to respect the personhood of employees and create meaningful work echo Mason’s principles. Tips for telling your brand’s story well or giving an “elevator speech” sound a lot like good narration and recitation.
