Beatrix Potter
From Dr. Shannon Whiteside:
If the characters Peter Rabbit and Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle are near and dear to your heart, you will enjoy Saving the Countryside, a recent picture book about Beatrix Potter. The author shares some of the ideas that inspired Beatrix to write and illustrate her lovely stories. I especially like this book because the author mentions the Lake District in England.
With the proceeds from her books, Beatrix purchased over 4,000 acres and fifteen farms that she later donated to the National Trust. These lands will always be preserved and enjoyed by people and animals. As you probably know, the Lake District is also where Charlotte Mason lived and had her House of Education. It is a beautiful place where it almost seems like time has stood still.
I enjoy reading these types of picture books that show how time in nature should be an important part of our lives. Mason truly understood how important that is, both for children and adults. Growing up as a suburban girl, I didn’t realize the impact that nature could have. I am grateful for Mason’s principles that have truly changed my life.
