Celebrating the Ides of March?
Soothsayer. Beware the Ides of March.
Soothsayer. Beware the Ides of March.
Caesar. What man is that?
Brutus. A soothsayer bids you beware the Ides of March.
Caesar. Set him before me; let me see his face.
Cassius. Fellow, come from the throng; look upon Caesar.
Caesar. What say'st thou to me now? speak once again.
Soothsayer. Beware the Ides of March.
Caesar. He is a dreamer; let us leave him: pass.
Next Wednesday, March 15, will mark the “Ides” (middle) of March. Julius Caesar was murdered on this date, and Plutarch writes there was, in fact, a soothsayer who foretold of the event. (Did you realize that Plutarch was Shakespeare’s source material for Shakespeare’s play? You can test your knowledge of Plutarch’s ‘fact’ vs Shakespeare’s ‘fiction’ here.)
The Ides of March can also feel a bit foreboding to those of us still a long way from the end of the school year! This recent post on Alveary Hive includes some ways members breathe new life into this time of year. If you are reading Julius Caesar in Term 3, an Ides of March party would be a fun way to celebrate the day. Here are a few ideas:
- Wear togas during lessons.
- Wish everyone a “Happy Roman Republic New Year”.
- Act out a scene from “Julius Caesar”.
- Check out Roman exhibits at a museum either in person or virtually. Or visit Rome in the year 320 C.E. through virtual reality!
- Prepare foods from ancient Rome using a book or website for inspiration.
In today’s Fabulous Friday post, share your ideas on surviving the Ides of March. If you decide to hold an Ides of March party, we would love to see pictures!
