Spanish Chapel

I would like to continue our discussion about Charlotte Mason’s Great Recognition. If you didn’t read the first post, you can find that in the August 4th Alveary Weekly. This week I want to take you on a video tour of the Spanish Chapel in the Santa Maria Novella in Florence, Italy. Please take some time to watch this video and learn about the fresco that inspired Mason.  If you would like to dig deeper, I encourage you to pick up the monograph by Dr. Deani Van Pelt and Camille Malucci titled Charlotte Mason’s Great Recognition: A Scheme of Magnificent Unity

Query

Out-of-Print Books: I am having a hard time finding some of the books for my child. Do you have suggestions for substitutions I could make?

With over 700 books in our curriculum, it is not uncommon for a few to go out of print between our choosing them in the fall and our publishing the curriculum on June 1. Here are some options for replacing some of these out-of-print books.

1. Onward (Geography 4-6) can be substituted with Matthew Henson's autobiography A Negro at the North Pole which can be found online for free or on Amazon.  You can read as much as you want for the term, but the suggested chapters include the following: ch. 1-6, 10, 13, 15-16, 21

2. Great Rivers of the World (Geography 4-8): Amazon has a few used copies left and it is more of a supplemental book, so we will replace it with online maps.

3. In Flanders Fields-(World History 4-6): We have reached out to the author for a PDF. In the meantime, the book can be found on YouTube as a read-aloud.

4. Byzantine Empire-(Ancient History 7-8): You can replace the 3 weeks of reading with the following readings: The Age of Justinian (The Story of Civilization by Philip Campbell) and The Byzantine Way of Life (The Byzantines by Thomas Caldecot Chubb).
