The Buzz - Volume 7, Issue 15

Internship Opportunity • Office Hours • Science • Narration

From Shannon Whiteside

I am sure you have heard the proverb, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”  Charlotte Mason believed that proverb applied to mothers and teachers, as well. I took her advice this week and headed to Lake Michigan for a couple of hours of sitting in the sun and painting sunflowers at the beach.

If mothers could learn to do for themselves what they do for their children when these are overdone, we should have happier households. Let the mother go out to play! If she would only have courage to let everything go when life becomes too tense, and just take a day, or half a day, out in the fields, or with a favourite book, or in a picture gallery looking long and well at just two or three pictures, or in bed, without the children, life would go on far more happily for both children and parents. The mother would be able to hold herself in 'wise passiveness,' and would not fret her children by continual interference, even of hand or eye––she would let them be (Vol. 3, p. 33-34).

Have you had a chance recently to go out and play? What did you do this week for fun to fill your own soul and just enjoy yourself? Head over to the Hive and leave your comments.

Notes

1. Internship Opportunity: A digital design internship opportunity for Alveary sophomores and juniors is coming soon. You'll have a chance to learn about what makes for good design, learn other tech skills, and then use those skills to help produce Alveary and CMI materials. You'll then have an internship to list on your resume and work examples you can use in a portfolio. Watch for the sign-up form next week.

2. Office Hours: Our next session will be Wednesday, September 21st at 3:30 p.m. EDT. Our guest will be Lisa Ector who is a CMI Board member and Director of Education at Blue Willow Tutorial, a four day week program using The Alveary. She will be talking about classroom management for homeschools or classrooms. Please submit your questions about this topic or any other questions at least 24 hours in advance by commenting on the event in The Hive. Here is a link to the spreadsheet with all of the past Office Hours videos.
