Managing or Minding Time?
The leaves are starting to change colors here in the Midwest and mums are filling the porches of many houses. Autumn brings much anticipation for apple cider, apple cobbler and apple doughnuts. We are quite excited about apples in my family! Since my children were little, we have gone apple picking each October and then made homemade apple pies for ourselves and neighbors. It is a fun tradition, and I am glad my children still want to participate.
There is something special about annual family traditions and events that goes deeper than apple pie. These traditions help give us a rhythm to our year and anticipation for each season that comes around. I am someone that likes to read about time management and making the most of my 24 hours. However, Dorothy Bass’ book Receiving the Day has encouraged me to think differently about time management. She states,
Our predicament is more complex, our yearning deeper, and the shape of time in our lives of greater importance than such techniques can address. We need to learn a richer language than the language of management. We need to develop life patterns that get us through our days not only with great efficiency but also with greater authenticity as human beings created in God’s image.
Taking time for seasonal traditions fights against the efficiency mindset and gives us space to enjoy the gifts that God provides for us in each season of the year.
What are your fall traditions that encourage you to slow down and make memories? Head over to the Hive and let us know.
