New Books!

In anticipation of this Charlotte Mason centenary year, 24 scholars from three countries came together and collectively authored 18 individual monographs—short books, if you will—considering aspects of the continued relevance of Charlotte Mason’s educational philosophy, practice, life, and leadership. First printed and introduced at the Charlotte Mason Centenary Conference in Ambleside a few weeks ago, they are now available to you and to educators worldwide

The monographs are written from a variety of perspectives and consider many different topics. Our own Alveary Program Director Dr. Shannon Whiteside authored one on Narration; former Alveary Director Dr. Jen Spencer co-authored another focused on what it means to consider children as persons; and CMI Founder Dr. Carroll Smith wrote on relational leadership. Still others focus on nature journals, Charlotte Mason’s Saviour of the World series, how a Charlotte Mason education leads to joy and much more. We’d encourage you to pick a few to read yourself or perhaps with a local study group. Let us know which you’d most like to read and we’ll send the monograph with the most votes out to all Alveary members for FREE!

Notes

1. Events Coordinator: CMI is growing and we’d love to add you to our team! Read the position description and apply or share with friends who may be interested.

2. Latin: Are you registered for the Alveary-Exclusive Latin class with Magistra Reed? This is a great opportunity for students new to Latin whether they are 7th graders or highschoolers. The first video will be posted on August 14.

3. Reflective Practice Plan Book: Set aside time to look through pages 10-12 of the Reflective Practice Plan Book and consider the personhood of each of your students–as well as your own. Then set goals as you begin a new school year. This can help you keep your focus as the year becomes busier and more opportunities compete for your time and attention.

4. High School Science Office Hours: Danielle Merritt-Sunseri will be hosting High School Science Office Hours on Thursdays at 3:30 p.m. (EDT), beginning on September 7

5. CORE Teacher Training: Registration is now open for fall cohorts of our 8-week intensive on Charlotte Mason's Methods, Conversations on Relational Education (CORE). Classes begin September 5.

6. Fast-Track Art Lessons: These lessons are designed for students who are beginning the Alveary in sixth grade (or beyond) or students who have not used the Alveary art lessons. They focus on one subject per term: Brush Drawing, Color Theory, and Drawing. You can find the lesson plans under Grade 5.

7. Out-of-Print Books: With over 700 books in our curriculum, there are sometimes a few that go out of print. We are working on substitutions. Here is the latest update:

  • Onward by Dolores Johnson (Geography: Grades 4-6): Can substitute the autobiography by Matthew Henson. There are different titles for it. Here is a free online version. It can also be purchased from Amazon.  The suggested chapters include: Ch. 1-6,10,13,15-16, and 21.
  • In Flanders Fields by Linda Granfield (World History: Grades 4-6): We have reached out to the author for a PDF. In the meantime, you can find it on YouTube as a read aloud.

Queries

1. Our Work: Where can I find a link to the PDF for the Our Work booklets?

You can find Our Work (which contains the hymns, folk songs, recitations, and artist prints) in the “Reference” section of the Program for grades 1-8. (Step 2 on your dashboard.)

2. Science Supplies: Are the supplies listed under Nature Study & General Science Supplies included in the science kit by Home Science Tools? Do I need to order one kit per student?

The science kits include most everything, but there are a few general supplies not included in the kits. The supplies listed under Nature Study and General Science Supplies are those used across multiple grade levels and are simply good items to have in the schoolroom.  These are different from the grade-specific supplies.  The grade-specific supplies include the HST kits, which contain many of the supplies needed for that grade.  There are some household items that were not economical to include in the kits (your wallet will thank us).  These are indicated in the grade-specific supplies, as well, and we suggest having the students collect these for you from in and around the schoolroom.  In addition, there are a few grades that have a couple of items that HST was not able to include this year.  These are also indicated in the grade-specific supplies.  Nothing in the supply lists is redundant.  If you obtain everything on the supply list for your selected grade level and you have the general supplies in your schoolroom, then you have everything you need for the entire science program.  If you don’t want to purchase the kit or you want to do only one component of the science program, then you will want to consult the lab book or natural history lesson plans to customize your supply list.  If you have students working together in a lab group, then one kit should be enough for 2-3 students.
